Day 1: Arrival in Kigali & City Exploration

Your adventure begins in Kigali, a modern, clean, and vibrant African capital set across rolling hills. After arrival, you embark on a soft city exploration, visiting key landmarks such as the Kigali Genocide Memorial for profound reflection, local art galleries, bustling markets, or cultural centres that highlight Rwanda’s creativity and resilience. The city’s calm ambience, green spaces, and warm hospitality offer a gentle introduction to the country before your journey into the wild. By evening, you settle into your Kigali hotel with anticipation for the primate week ahead.

Day 2: Transfer to Volcanoes National Park

After breakfast, you leave Kigali behind and drive north toward Rwanda’s most iconic landscape—the Virunga volcano chain. The route reveals terraced hillsides, lush valleys, and rural communities going about their daily rhythm. As you approach Musanze, the looming volcano peaks pierce the sky, creating one of Africa’s most dramatic panoramas. By afternoon, you check into your lodge near Volcanoes National Park, where crisp mountain air, volcanic slopes, and thick bamboo forests surround you. The atmosphere is serene, setting the stage for the next day’s extraordinary gorilla encounter.

Day 3: Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park

The morning begins with excitement as you arrive at the park headquarters for your gorilla trekking briefing. Rangers explain the trekking process and assign you to a gorilla family before guiding you into the forest. The trek may take you through bamboo zones, moss-covered trees, and high-altitude vegetation as you track the gorillas’ movements.

When you finally meet your gorilla family, the moment is profound. You observe the silverback’s solemn strength, the playful antics of juveniles, and the motherly tenderness shared between females and their infants. The one hour spent with them feels timeless—deeply moving, intimate, and unforgettable. After trekking back, the afternoon invites rest and quiet reflection at your lodge nestled in the volcanic foothills.

Day 4: Golden Monkey Trekking & Cultural Immersion

This day offers an uplifting contrast as you return to the forest for golden monkey trekking. These charming primates with their bright golden coats and swift, playful movements bring joyful energy to the bamboo forests. Observing them leap, chatter, and feed creates a lively and visually vibrant primate experience.

Later, you may visit the Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village (Gorilla Guardians Centre), where traditional dance, storytelling, and cultural demonstrations reveal the connection between Rwandan heritage and conservation. The day ends in the peaceful mountain setting of your lodge.

Day 5: Transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park

After breakfast, you begin the scenic journey south toward the ancient rainforests of Nyungwe. The drive is breathtaking, winding through the terraced hills of Rwanda’s countryside, charming villages, and vast tea plantations glowing in the sun. Along the way, cultural or historical stops in Huye (Butare) enrich your appreciation of Rwanda’s past. By late afternoon, you arrive at your lodge on the edge of Nyungwe Forest—a pristine, biodiverse ecosystem where primates thrive and the forest hums with ancient life.

Day 6: Chimpanzee Trekking in Nyungwe Forest

Before sunrise, you set out into the dense and magical Nyungwe Forest. The air is crisp, and the forest stirs with distant calls of chimpanzees. Rangers guide you through lush vegetation as you follow the energetic vocalizations of the chimpanzee community. Once found, the experience is electrifying as chimps display remarkable speed, intelligence, and expressiveness—communicating, grooming, and interacting within their social world. After returning to your lodge, the afternoon is free for rest or optional nature walks among the forest’s countless birds and smaller primate species.

Day 7: Canopy Walk & Transfer to Lake Kivu

The morning begins with Nyungwe’s legendary canopy walk—an elevated bridge suspended high above the forest floor. From this vantage point, the treetops open into magnificent views of valleys and distant mountain ridges. You watch birds glide beneath you, leaves shimmer in the sunlight, and the rainforest stretch endlessly across the landscape.

After the canopy experience, you begin the scenic drive to Lake Kivu, one of Africa’s most beautiful highland lakes. By afternoon, you arrive at your lakeside lodge, where gentle breezes, lapping waters, and fishermen’s canoes create a peaceful lakeside ambience. This is your time to relax after days of trekking.

Day 8: Lakeside Relaxation & Return to Kigali

Your final morning unfolds slowly along the calm shores of Lake Kivu. You may enjoy a relaxed boat ride, island visit, or simply savour the tranquillity of the lake’s shimmering waters and terraced hills. Later, you begin the drive back to Kigali, retracing Rwanda’s scenic landscapes. By afternoon or early evening, you arrive in the city with a heart full of memories—gorillas in the mist, chimps in ancient forests, golden monkeys among bamboo, and the warm spirit of Rwanda’s people.
