Budongo Central Forest – Chimpanzee Trekking and Habituation Experience

The trek usually lasts between 2 to 4 hours, depending on the location of the chimpanzee groups. Along the way, visitors encounter other primates such as red-tailed monkeys, black-and-white colobus monkeys, and olive baboons, as well as forest birds and beautiful butterflies. Once the chimpanzees are found, visitors are allowed one magical hour with them—watching them play, groom each other, and communicate in fascinating ways.
Chimpanzee Habituation Experience (CHEX)
For travelers seeking a deeper and more immersive encounter, Budongo offers the Chimpanzee Habituation Experience. Unlike regular trekking, habituation allows visitors to spend a full day with chimpanzees as they go about their daily activities. The experience starts early in the morning as you follow the chimps from their nests when they wake up. Birdwatching and Wildlife in Budongo Forest
Budongo is home to over 360 bird species, making it a top birding destination in Uganda. Some sought-after species include the puvel’s illadopsis, chocolate-backed kingfisher, crowned eagle, African dwarf kingfisher, and white-thighed hornbill.
The forest is also rich in wildlife beyond chimpanzees. Visitors may encounter duikers, bushbucks, forest elephants, and numerous reptiles and butterflies. Its towering mahogany trees, some over 80 meters tall, create a serene atmosphere perfect for nature walks.
Best Time to Visit Budongo Central Forest
The best time to visit Budongo is during the dry seasons from December to February and June to September. During these months, trekking is easier as the forest trails are less muddy, and chimpanzees are easier to locate. However, the forest can be visited all year round, with the wet seasons offering lush greenery and excellent birdwatching opportunities.
How to Get to Budongo Forest
Budongo Central Forest is easily accessible from Kampala, about 4–5 hours by road. It lies within the southern sector of Murchison Falls National Park, near Kaniyo Pabidi. Visitors can also fly from Entebbe or Kajjansi to Pakuba or Bugungu airstrips and then drive to the forest.
