5-Day Uganda–Rwanda Twin Gorilla Trekking Safari.
Overview.
The 5-Day Uganda–Rwanda Twin Gorilla Trekking Safari is a rare and exhilarating adventure that allows travellers to experience mountain gorillas in two different countries—Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park. This immersive cross-border journey blends the rugged jungles of Bwindi with the volcanic slopes of the Virunga Mountains, offering a deeper, more varied understanding of the world’s most endangered great apes. It is a safari crafted for primate enthusiasts, adventure seekers, and travellers who want to witness the magic of gorillas in two distinct habitats while enjoying the scenic beauty, culture, and warm hospitality of both countries.
Day By Day / 5-Day Uganda–Rwanda Twin Gorilla Trekking Safari.
Day 1: Arrival in Kigali & Transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Your journey begins in the vibrant city of Kigali, where you are met and driven north toward the Cyanika or Katuna border. Rwanda’s rolling green hills unfold in breathtaking layers as you approach the frontier. After completing border formalities, the landscape shifts into Uganda’s dramatic Kigezi Highlands, known for terraced slopes, deep valleys, and cool mountain air. By afternoon, you arrive at your lodge located near Bwindi Impenetrable National Park—home to half of the world’s mountain gorillas. The rest of the day invites relaxation, forest views, and anticipation for the first gorilla trek.
Day 2: Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest
The day begins early as you arrive at the ranger station for your gorilla trekking briefing. Soon after, skilled trackers lead you into Bwindi’s dense rainforest—an ancient ecosystem alive with mist, birdsong, giant ferns, and moss-covered slopes. The trek varies depending on the gorillas’ movements, but every step is filled with wonder.
When you meet your gorilla family, the world falls silent. You observe the silverback’s powerful calm, juveniles rolling and climbing playfully, and mothers caring tenderly for their infants. The hour with them becomes an emotional, intimate encounter that stays etched in memory. After trekking back, you spend the afternoon resting, taking a village walk, or simply absorbing the serenity of the forest.
Day 3: Transfer from Bwindi to Volcanoes National Park (Rwanda)
After breakfast, you depart Bwindi and drive toward the Rwanda border. The journey reveals rolling highland scenery, terraced farms, and sweeping mountain vistas. Once across into Rwanda, the roads become smooth and scenic as the Virunga volcanoes rise prominently on the horizon. By mid-afternoon, you arrive at your lodge near Volcanoes National Park. The atmosphere here is crisp and elevated, with bamboo forests, volcanic peaks, and cool breezes providing a dramatic backdrop for the next day’s gorilla trek.
Day 4: Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park
Another day of excitement begins with a trek through Rwanda’s iconic bamboo and Hagenia forests. Rangers guide you up the volcanic slopes, where air grows thinner and mist settles softly among the trees. The experience of gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park feels distinct from Bwindi—quicker access, different vegetation, and sweeping views of the Virunga massif.
When you encounter your second gorilla family, you notice behaviour variations, group dynamics, and habitat differences. The silverback may drum his chest, juveniles may climb bamboo stems, and infants may curiously peek from behind their mothers. The hour spent with them is a second chance to witness the beauty and resilience of these endangered primates—an extraordinary privilege rarely experienced twice in one journey. After trekking, you return to your lodge for a peaceful final evening in the mountains.
Day 5: Return to Kigali
The final morning unfolds gently with breakfast and views of the volcanic ranges. After checkout, you begin your drive back to Kigali, passing through Rwanda’s lush countryside and lively communities. Depending on your schedule, you may make optional stops at cultural centres, coffee shops, or markets before your drop-off. By afternoon, you arrive in Kigali, marking the end of an exceptional twin-country gorilla adventure—one that has taken you from deep Ugandan jungles to volcanic Rwandan highlands.
