2 Days Congo Gorilla Tour – Starting From Kigali or Goma
The 2-day Congo Gorilla Tour is an intense, action-packed wildlife adventure, offering travelers a chance to trek mountain gorillas in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Starting from either Kigali in Rwanda or Goma in DRC, this short tour is perfect for those with limited time but a desire to witness the majesty of Virunga’s endangered gorillas. The experience also showcases the breathtaking landscapes of the Virunga volcanic region.
Day 1: Transfer to Volcanoes National Park (DRC)
The tour begins early in the morning with a drive from Kigali or Goma to the DRC border, where travelers complete immigration formalities. Upon arrival in the vicinity of Volcanoes National Park, guests receive a briefing from experienced guides on gorilla trekking protocols, safety, and park rules.
After the briefing, trekkers head into the forest in search of habituated gorilla families. The trek can range from 1 to 5 hours depending on the gorillas’ location. Guides ensure visitors maintain a safe distance while observing gorillas feeding, playing, and interacting socially in their natural habitat.
Accommodation on the first night is usually at nearby lodges or eco-camps, providing comfort after the day’s trekking activities.
Day 2: Optional Activities and Return
The second day allows for additional activities depending on time and interests. Options may include a second gorilla trek, golden monkey tracking, or nature walks around the volcanic region.
After completing the morning activities, travelers return to Kigali or Goma, completing the 2-day adventure. Despite its short duration, the tour offers an unforgettable encounter with one of the world’s most endangered primates.
Important Considerations for the Tour
Health and Safety: Trekking in DRC requires a moderate fitness level, proper hiking gear, and compliance with gorilla trekking rules. Wearing face masks and maintaining distance from gorillas is mandatory to protect both visitors and wildlife.
Permits: Gorilla trekking permits are required and should be booked in advance. They are issued by the Congolese Institute for the Conservation of Nature (ICCN).
Best Time to Visit: The dry seasons from June to September and December to February are ideal for gorilla trekking, as trails are easier to navigate and wildlife activity is more visible.
