Day 1: Kigali City to Volcanoes National Park

Your journey begins in Kigali with a morning pickup followed by a beautiful drive northwards. As the city fades behind you, Rwanda’s “land of a thousand hills” identity comes to life in terraced landscapes, lush valleys, and distant volcanic silhouettes rising dramatically above the countryside. You may stop briefly at cultural or historical points of interest before continuing into Musanze, Rwanda’s primate tourism hub. By early afternoon you arrive at your lodge near Volcanoes National Park, where cool mountain air, bamboo forests, and the towering Virunga peaks create an atmosphere filled with anticipation. The rest of the day is spent relaxing, enjoying lodge views, and preparing for the next day’s gorilla trek.

Day 2: Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park & Return to Kigali

Morning arrives with crisp mountain temperatures as you head to the Volcanoes National Park headquarters for your briefing. Rangers assign you a gorilla family and lead you into the forest, where the trek may take anywhere from a short walk to several hours depending on the group’s movement. The climb through bamboo zones and lush Hagenia forests is filled with anticipation until you finally meet the gorillas.

The moment is powerful—silverbacks watching with calm authority, juveniles tumbling and swinging with endless curiosity, and mothers caring softly for their infants. The one hour spent with them feels intimate and transformative, offering a deep appreciation for their gentle nature and the conservation work that protects them. After your descent from the forest, you return to Kigali, arriving by late afternoon with memories of one of Africa’s most moving wildlife encounters.
